What are The Principles of Visual Design

Visual appearance is important in an app or web design. Choosing the right colors, creating the contrasts, choosing a typeface that says it all, and keeping the right amount of white space can be known as art. The aesthetics of a product are in most cases what makes you choose it and sometimes can be the difference that matters. Although graphic design is only a small part of the entire mechanism, it is what we first see and judge.

Think about how you chose your last sweater or how you are choosing your next pair of jeans. Accessibility and design meet together and make a team for the greater goal. But usually, to make this happen, UI UX designers and graphic designers need to be able to put their ideas into action and keep in mind the principles that will assure them of a greater outcome.

Principles of Visual Design

Dot, Line and Shape

You can create anything with those three elements. It’s how visual design starts and how we can integrate shapes, icons, and illustrations into our web or app design. You can obtain a line by connecting two dots and go further into obtaining geometrical forms. But you already know how this works, so let’s move further.

Color

Color is a big part of the visual aspect of a graphic or UI UX design. The human eye can see over 10 million different colors and all of those colors carry different meanings. Think about it – we learn that red means stop at aon a traffic light and green means go. We associated yellow with warmth and blue with the sea. Color helps create the mood of the design and is the one that awaits the users when opening up an app or web design.

We all can agree on the fact that color has the power to deliver all sorts of emotions. When you imagine the color red you immediately think about big brands such as Coca-Cola, YouTube, or Netflix. You might feel inspired, as the color captures everyone’s eyes even in an app or web design.

Typography

We all know what typography is. Typography is everywhere and it will continue to surround us regardless of the palace and time. And since the first typeface was used in the early 15th century, typography and the way we design and mimic calligraphic text evolved, and have been interpreting our messages ever since.

Typography is a big deal in UI UX or graphic design. It’s the one that helps create a contrast and draws the users’s attention towards an important aspect of a design. We can use a certain type of typography to send a message or to create a specific look of the design. Some typefaces look best for longer texts and some look better just to make an impact. So, next time you are choosing a typeface, pay more attention to the true meaning behind it.

Space

Having a design that feels too cluttered is not what you want when it comes to a design. Using the right amount of white space will make your project readable and easy to scroll through. Think of letters for example. Using too little space between your letters will make those words and texts unbearable and even generate a bad user experience. The space between words and letters is usually known as negative space and all designers should be aware that this is part of the design. So, try and find the best ratio and incorporate it into your web or app design.

Contrast

Any design needs to be balanced. Whether it is a simple app design or a complex website, we need to find the right formula that will create our rhythm and make our design elements stand out. We all heard that our design needs to stand out and the rightrigh contrast can help you have that. And keep in mind that a design without contrast is unreadable and hard to grasp.

Scale

With the right scaling you can create a hierarchy in your design. Meaning that not all elements and components from your design should carry the same size. With elements that are different sizes, you can create a visual hierarchy and guide your user through the design. A flawless design triggers a good user experience which is what every UI UX designer or graphic designer needs.

Framing

Frame your design. Framing does more than you would think and can catch the user’s attention and let them know what they should be paying more attention to.
