ChatGPT has been one of the hottest topics in the graphic design community in recent years. But can we integrate it into our UI/UX designer work?
Sliding down the memory lane we can see that technology has come a long way. Our society no longer lingers on the thought of humans working but more on machines doing the work for us. We kept furthering away from our primitive tasks and started building robots and teaching others to do our jobs instead of doing all the hard work.
We made the switch from cultivating our fields and hunting to calling an Uber and ordering in. Who would have thought 60 years ago that if you have no idea how to cook, or if your work is keeping you occupied 24/7 you would have the ability to open your phone, scroll down to menus from your favorite restaurants, and have them delivered to your doorstep in no time? Well, our ancestors would probably be laughing when seeing how easy surviving has got. No hunting, no looking for shelter, just our obsession with technology.
After we discovered electricity everything took a turn for the better and made us see our society as different. And as Thomas Edison said “We will make Electric Light so cheap that only the wealthy can afford to burn candles.”, and so he did, so slowly but surely took over our lives and dictated our development.
“The point of human evolution is adapting to circumstance. Not letting go of the old, but adapting it, is necessary.”, and Sonali Bendre is right. Humanity learned how to adapt and how to accept digitalization without questioning it. When we heard about driverless cars or electric cars we were excited to see if they work. When a new smartphone is released we want it, we desire to be up-to-date when it comes to technology. So, web designers need to be delivering the right product to us in order to have a great user experience.
Even more so, for years, we’ve seen artificial intelligence depicted in science fiction movies as a futuristic technology that was just out of reach. And since AI took over the world we had to deal with the changes and the consequences everything has brought over us. Some jobs were erased, and some appeared as well. But for the ones worried that the end is approaching, it’s not the case when it comes to UI/UX design. As many of us are hoping on the AI bandwagon, we can expect to see some impressive advancements and uses of AI in all industries and this also includes the graphic design industry.
How Does ChatGPT Work?
For those who don’t know what I am talking about, ChatGPT is the AI chatbot that changed the trajectory of our development and set new rules when it comes to every domain of activity. The AI chatbot uses natural language processing to mimic our behavior and respond accordingly to our questions and tasks. It is fed with information and is trained every day by everyone who interacts with it.
It can come up with a well-scheduled diet, organize your tasks, make your travel itinerary, and help you with the code you need when programming. The language processing program was launched in 2022 and it created a revolution surrounding it. It came and took us all by storm, delivering new solutions that proved not to be the best alternatives.
What Is AI and How Is It Changing Our Lives?
As John McCarthy, also known as the father of AI, put it “It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.". AI uses machine learning to operate and deliver the right information or to achieve certain tasks.
In the realm of data science, machine learning has garnered significant focus recently, influencing various aspects of our lives. Its operation involves gathering data, employing statistical techniques to uncover insights, predict outcomes, and provide valuable information.
Whether it's the recommendation system on Netflix, the filtration of spam emails, or the streamlining of processes through automation, the applications of machine learning are extensive and come in support of the user experience. Constantly, scientists and engineers are enhancing ML by refining algorithms, enabling them to learn from historical data, and iteratively improving accuracy – similar to the way the human brain refines responses through trial and error.
But when it comes to using AI in your design, it’s not the best idea you can think of.
ChatGPT is fed with the information given by us, so this means if I am delivering the wrong information to it, ChatGPT can’t really tell if I am wrong or not. Let’s say multiple people write about an event that didn’t happen according to our reality, but you can find a bunch of articles online that say so. So, if you are doing your research online, regarding your target audience or searching about the product you need to create a UI/UX design for, it's not the best idea to choose ChatGPT as your primary resource fountain.
How To Use ChatGPT for Your UI/UX Design?
No More Lorem Ipsum
However, you can use ChatGPT to help you fill in the black spaces in your design, which means no more Lorem Ipsum. The machine learning device can generate the content you need instead of copying already used information from the web, as when asked ChatGPT can provide the info you need, as long and as lengthy as you want it. So, if you didn’t like how your design looked using Lorem Ipsum you now have an alternative that will save you the trouble, making it seem and feel real.
New Learning Resources
ChatGPT can help you develop better skills by recommending courses and books every UI/UX designer should be aware of. UI/UX industry is always changing, it brings up new trends and as in any technological field, we need to stay up to date with any new wave that comes up. So, we can use ChatGPT to help us with recommendations of books or courses that might help us get a better understanding of that matter. AI can also come in handy for designers who are just starting out their careers and are looking for a better organization of the available resources and sorting them by their difficulty and category.
Personalize A Specific Tone Of Voice
When it comes to rephrasing certain texts, ChatGPT can be your right helping hand. It can personalize certain text and deliver the right message to your audience. Every audience has a specific way of talking and addressing, and to get closer and guide them to better understand your product you need to be delivering it in the right manner. And, most of the time finding that specific tone of voice can be hard and can also take up more time than you have available in your agenda. ChatGPT can be the shortcut you need as it can provide the necessary data you require. So, next time you don’t know which would be the specific tone of voice for an app that targets preschoolers or elderly people you know who to ask.
Show you how you can explain tech terms to your non-tech friends
We can all agree on the fact that explaining tech terms to our non-tech friends can be a lot more difficult than we would have planned. Having the patience and using the right terminology can prove to be not as fun as you would think. Imagine the situations when you need to explain to the creative team why their moving rainbow or any other crazy idea can’t be done in non-tech terms. Many people are not even aware of the difference between concepts such as product and graphic design. However, ChatGPT can be the link between the two worlds, making your explanation more human and less robot.
Generate Examples Of User Flow
When creating a new app, the user flow is the one that can help you anticipate the next steps your user will take. Already knowing the possible situations can help you act upon and prevent certain moments and actions that can lower your users’ experience. And AI can help you by creating certain situations that can predict the user’s flow. So, you will be able to design and take care of your user’s needs.
Write Product Brief
Sometimes you don’t have the inspiration to write a product brief, but a good description of your product is mandatory when presenting it to your client. You need to have everything in order and be as precise as possible in order to help your users and clients understand the approach your design has. And you can personalize your requirements and make them as personal as possible.
Find Inspiration
Designing is a form of art, a form of letting your imagination free, running wild. “Design is not a single object or dimension. Design is messy and complex” as the famous designer, Natasha Jen, said. The thought process is different for each UI UX design and sometimes it needs certain triggers that will help your mind its inspiration. And ChatGPT can lead us in certain directions and come up with ideas that can help us.
Finding the right tool that can help us as UI UX designers is hard. Designing implies creativity and machine learning can help us find our inspiration. A design system creates productivity and efficiency by developing elements that can be personalized and used by a designer or by everyone from a team. It creates accessible libraries that can store assets and be later used or integrated into a design. Design systems give you the ability to create a website or an app from scratch, only needing your personal touch when it comes to customizing your already existing elements.
