The Importance of UX Research in Product Design

We all know that UX design is an important part of developing an app or web design. But do you know what’s even more important? UX research!

In the world of design, every part of the design process is extremely important. From designing the interface to developing the user persona, and creating the architecture of a project design. The reality is that the initial stage of a UX research process is the foundation of a product. In fact, a UX researcher is in charge of developing the structure of a design.

So, stick around to find out what is UX research, what does a UX researcher do, and everything more about user experience and UX strategy.

What is a UX Researcher?

A UX researcher aims to understand the possible users and analyze their behavior and any helpful details regarding demographics. When becoming a UX researcher, you need to keep in mind a set of questions such as –  Who are your users? Where do they come from? What do your users want to find? How can your product be helpful for possible users?

After answering all those questions can create a persona that fits your possible audience and know beforehand what to look for. You will be able to recognize whether or not a certain niche fits your persona description. Whether or not is the UX process suitable for your audience and details if they prefer web or app design and create a suitable strategy for it.

Types of UX Research

  • Quantitative Research – This type of user experience research has as the center of attention numbers and statistics. So, with this type of research, UX research will have the capability of measuring the time a possible user spends completing a given task, and the number of users that are able to complete the task. With this type of user experience, researchers can also see the number of bugs and the time users spend.
  • Qualitative Research – This type of research involves the examination of non-numerical insights. In this part of the research, you will find out why users might find difficulties when completing given tasks and why they had trouble.
  • Behavioral Research – With this type of research UX designs can examine the user’s behavior and see how users react to certain situations.
  • Attitudinal Research – A user experience researcher can analyze and see what a user can have feelings and different attitudes with regard to the experience.

Methods for UX Research

  • Card sorting – With this method the participants involved in the research are divided into groups and given specific labels. With the help of UX research, every UI XU designer can create a better experience for all possible users and have a more intuitive and flawless experience.
  • Usability tests – Those tests are done at the same time when a task can be completed at the same time you observe. This test gives you the ability to fulfill different tasks and find out the success rate, and whether or not your customers are satisfied with the process.
  • A/B testing – With this type of testing, two products are tested one against the other and followed to see how users react to them. The behavior, reactions, and overall user experience are put to the test and picked accordingly.
  • User interviews – Those types of interviews are conducted face to face and help to create the UX strategy. They have the ability to offer insights, into the product and how the product is seen by possible users, sustaining a good user experience.
  • Diary studies – With diary studies, we have the ability to analyze different key points from the user’s behavior and see those details over a longer period of time. It can be whether or not they prefer app or mobile design, or if the design needs any improvements. With the help of this UX research method, helping designers understand the possible user experience.
  • Contextual observations – This method of UX research can be found when analyzing based on certain circumstances and
  • Ethnographic interviews – See your audience and find the different details regarding the given UX strategy.

What Does A UX Researcher Do?

As a UX researcher, our primary job is to ask questions about the way our users act. Who are our end users? What do they want and why? Is this a want? A necessity? Or just a treat? How can we help them make their lives better and easier? All of these questions have to be answered –  not guessed or assumptions, but rather researched.

UX researchers give users a voice. They humanize them in the most natural and closest way possible. You are responsible for providing users with a product or service that fits all of their needs and wants. In other words, UX researchers are the reason we create human-centered product designs.

UX Researcher Salary

Of course, the salary of a UX researcher depends on the country you are in, your experience level, and even the company you are working for. However, due to the high demand in the US, UX researchers are high-paid jobs, and you will find that they have similar salary ranges. According to Glassdoor, the following salary averages are:

  • Junior UX Researcher– $81,013/year
