Imagine you are a scientist – and a good one. Even more so, with your capabilities, you can develop cures and find ways to help people in any circumstance. Now, let’s say that in humanity, a crisis arises and you are the only one who can come up with a solution that will save mankind. As you can imagine you will need your science lab to do all the work and deliver the cure, but for an unknown reason, your access to the laboratory is denied. You hold the way of saving mankind in your hands but you can’t because you don’t have accessibility.
This will only make you feel frustrated, and overwhelmed and might even get your heart racing when the solution is that simple. Believe it or not, but this situation is commonly encountered in UI UX design and in the design process.
Accessibility in UX design is the key to the gate that anyone desires. Is what makes a user experience good and what we all should think about in the design process. After all, we are creating interfaces for humans, not for unknown creatures. UI UX design should be accessible to anyone, it should follow familiar criteria and should also be inclusive to everyone’s needs.
In the UX design world, accessibility makes sure we design web pages and apps that give our users the ability to navigate them smoothly. At the same time, web and app design can spark joy and deliver the necessary information without using a secret password. We need to do our research, understand our audience, and respond to their needs
Accessibility gives us power. It gives us knowledge and options, is what makes a user experience great. It depends on both UI design and UX design which can influence the whole outcome and time users spend in our design.
“Accessible design is good design — it benefits people who don’t have disabilities as well as people who do. Accessibility is all about removing barriers and providing the benefits of technology for everyone.” – Steve Ballmer
Design should be a place where barriers don’t exist and everyone can benefit from it equally. It is what makes the users feel equal and experience similar interaction with the web or app design. Accessibility in UX design is one of the most important features. It improves usability and features like an intuitive design, and clear and organized navigation that can be used by everyone. Being accessible should be more important than having a complex or aesthetically pleasing design that is hard to understand or read.
We live in a world where everybody is different, so, we as UI/UX designers should take care of their needs and make our web or app design inclusive.
• Be practical
No one likes a book that can be read and no one likes a web design that can’t be navigated. Imagine reading a book. The cover, the fonts, and every element used need to be optimized in order for seamless navigation, in our case reading.
However, imagine this book is not arranged in a natural and normal way. You don’t follow a natural course of chapters and are arranged in an unknown order. In this situation, accessibility levels are falling rapidly and your reader is losing all interest. This can happen with your UX UI design as well if you don’t deliver a design that is easy to follow or deductible.
• Make the invisible visible
Designs need to be for everyone and in order to do that you need to think of problems that might arise. Imagine opening a design and you can not distinguish anything. It feels like you are in a dark room where no one can guide you. This is how visually impaired users or color blind users might feel when you are choosing the wrong colors to represent your design. So, pay attention to any small detail that can change the whole user experience.
• Be clear and precise
Text is not the only one who can deliver a message. Images, icons, animations, or any other visual element can also be used to help the user understand and navigate the design. When we see a tick icon near an input that has been completed, chances are that we won’t even notice that the input is not correct. So, app and web design need to be clear and offer users a precise user experience.
We at uinkits understand the importance of inputs in great user experiences and creating amazing UI designs. That’s why we’ve developed a Figma UI Kit with design components that include these essential UI elements that enable you to design intuitive and user-friendly interfaces effortlessly.
