ChatGPT for designers? Ways to Use ChatGPT in Your Design

The time has finally come. The robot movies are slowly becoming more and more real, helping us deliver faster results and be more productive. Although artificial intelligence and machine learning might seem a scary subject, there are ways we can leverage the power of AI to make our UI UX design process easier.

What is ChatGPT?

As John McCarthy, also known as the father of AI, put it “It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.".  AI uses machine learning to operate and deliver the right information or to achieve certain tasks.

Machine learning has garnered significant focus recently, influencing various aspects of our lives. We have smarter equipment, faster responses from our phones and even virtual assistants, such as Alexa, Siri or Google home who answer all our questions based on what is fed. Its operation involves gathering data, employing statistical techniques to uncover insights, predict outcomes, and provide valuable information.

Whether it's the recommendation system on Netflix, the filtration of spam emails, or the streamlining of processes through automation, the applications of machine learning are extensive and come in support of the user experience. Constantly, scientists and engineers are enhancing ML by refining algorithms, enabling them to learn from historical data, and iteratively improving accuracy – similar to the way the human brain refines responses through trial and error.

How Does ChatGPT Work?

For those who don’t know what I am talking about, ChatGPT is the AI chatbot that changed the trajectory of our development and set new rules when it comes to every domain of activity. The AI chatbot uses natural language processing to mimic our behavior and respond accordingly to our questions and tasks. It is fed with information and is trained every day by everyone who interacts with it.

It can come up with a well-scheduled diet, organize your tasks, make your travel itinerary, and help you with the code you need when programming. The language processing program was launched in 2022 and it created a revolution surrounding it. It came and took us all by storm, delivering new solutions that proved not to be the best alternatives.

How to Use ChatGPT in UI UX Design

For designers, ChatGPT can be a great use when it comes to enhancing the creative process and streamlining workflow, here is a comprehensive list of what it can help with:

  • Find inspiration – When looking for inspiration for your next project ChatGPT can be a helpful tool. It delivers insightful tips and tricks and can even help you create an opinion on specific subjects. Even more so, if you are designing features - specific ChatGPT can come up with relevant options which can improve your product.
  • Create the feature flow – When doing your research or just being curious on how a certain app works you can simply ask ChatGPT to reproduce the feature flow you are interested oin. You can simply ask what is the feature flow for the element you desire and find out everything you need.
  • Give up Lorem Ipsum – As designers, our focus might not be yet on the content of our website or app. So, we tend to add "Lorem Ipsum" everywhere to have an idea of how it would look like with a text, without actually writing a text. But with ChatGPT, we can generate content and see exactly how the final product will look like.
  • Explain Certain Terms – When starting as a UI/UX designer, some terms might not be clear enough yet. But ChatGPT can be our mini-mentor and explain to us exactly what we don't understand.
  • Discover new websites and tools  – Maybe we're looking for a specific tool, or maybe we're doing research for our product design and we're looking for new inspiration. With ChatGPT, we can quickly find recommendations of new websites and tools to use in our design process.
