5 Trends in Mobile App Design in 2024

Millions and millions of mobile apps are being launched annually. And every year, technological advancements and consumer demands change how products are created, with UI UX designers developing new mobile app design trends.

And it makes sense! Although the fundamentals of a mobile design remain the same, we will always come up with new ways of improvising the user interface of a product design and the user experience of our users. And in the last few years, mobile app design ideas have changed like never before. From flat design to 3D animations. From bright, bold, and vibrant colors to subtle gradients and muted tones, with a shift towards a minimalist approach.

So, what will 2024 look like for the app design industry? Let’s find out the mobile app design trends that will dominate in 2024.

1. Mobile-First Design

The mobile-first design trend has started being a priority for most product designers. And for a good reason – more and more people are using their mobile phones over their tablets or desktops to access the internet.

What is mobile-first design? It represents the idea that UI UX designers (and developers) start the process of creating a digital product from the mobile end. This means that the app design ideas are designed first and then scaled up to larger screens. So, we start from the dimensions of a mobile screen, and then we adapt its features and translate them into the dimensions of other devices to create these versions as well.

This way, we can increase engagement, improve SEO performance, improve advertising rates, increase efficiency in the design process, and have better scalability. So, if you’re not using the mobile-first design approach, you should start now.

2. Microinteractions

In the app design world, microinteractions can make the difference between a good UI UX design and an amazing one. In other words, microinteractions represent those details that elevate the user experience and make the app UI design more interactive and exciting. Whether it’s a dynamic loading page, some fun gamified animations, or even a visual cue, these elements add a specific personality to our app, humanizing it and making it more desirable for our users.

However, the most essential rule in microinteractions: keep it simple! Although they can turn tedious actions or elements into memorable experiences, they should still be small and subtle. This way, we don’t overload our users with too much animation and information while still paying attention to the little details.

Microinteractions have four parts: triggers, rules, feedback, and loops & modes.

3. Futuristic Colors

App designers will focus more on colorful app interfaces – bold and futuristic color palettes, more specifically. Whether it’s mesh gradients, duotone icons, or neon palettes, we will play around with different (and multiple) color styles and combinations to create visually pleasant interfaces that can instantly capture our users’ attention.

So, if you want to bring your app design to life in a futuristic way, this trend might be your answer. Why? Well, with these bold color palettes, we can give our apps a cutting-edge and state-of-the-art look, making them desirable for users seeking innovative product designs and mobile app UI designs. So, prepare for mobile app designs that seem ahead of their time and go beyond and above.

4. AR Integrations

In 2024, a significant trend in mobile app design will be integrating augmented reality (AR). As immersive technologies continue to advance and become more popular, UI UX designers and app developers will focus on combining mobile app design with these technologies – especially when it comes to AR.

Google’s insights show that 61% of customers prefer retailers that offer different AR solutions over those with basic functionalities. This means that in 2024, we expect to see mobile app features like – interactive shopping, AR navigation, and so much more. Even more so, these AR features will become highly prevalent in industries such as healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and especially real estate.

5. Focus on Accessibility

As UI UX designers, we have become aware of accessibility issues when it comes to websites for quite some time. But in 2024, the focus will also be shifted towards mobile accessibility. And luckily, artificial intelligence will play a significant role in improving accessibility in mobile app design. From computer vision, speech-to-text functionality, and pressure sensors, app designers will introduce many innovative features in 2024.

Even more so, app design ideas will also revolve around digital and hands-free interaction capabilities with our phones. This way, mobile apps will create a more personalized user experience by adding features to their app UI designs that can be accessible to everyone – whether they are directly using their mobile devices or not.

2024 is a big year for mobile app design! These will take our design to the next level – both for the app UI and UX design. So, make sure to take advantage of these trends because you will create amazing stuff.
